Paracas Reserve

A dramatic coastal desert where the Andes meet the Pacific — home to flamingos, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, and the famous Ballestas Islands.

Getting There

Paracas is 260 km south of Lima — about 3.5 to 4 hours by road. The most practical option is a day trip from Lima (see tours in the sidebar), but staying overnight lets you experience the reserve at sunrise and explore Ica's wine region. Shared shuttle buses leave Lima's Miraflores district daily, or you can travel independently by bus (Cruz del Sur, Perubús). Do not drive through Pisco at night.

What to Do

The Ballestas Islands boat tour (2 hours) is essential — thousands of sea lions, Humboldt penguins, pelicans, boobies and sometimes dolphins, all within an hour of the harbour. The Paracas National Reserve itself is a vast, spectacular desert peninsula where reddish sand meets Pacific blue. Drive or cycle to the Lagunilla cove, the Cathedral rock arch, and the Candelabra geoglyph visible from the water. For adventure, sand dune buggy rides and sandboarding operate from nearby Huacachina (1.5 hrs east via Ica). Kite surfing is popular along the bay in the afternoon when winds pick up.

Safety & Practical Notes

The sun intensity on the Paracas coast is extreme year-round — wear SPF 50+, a hat, and sunglasses even on overcast days. Boat tours can get wet and rough; bring a light waterproof jacket and protect electronics in a dry bag. Stay in El Chaco (Paracas town) rather than Pisco — safer, closer to the reserve, and with far better dining. Keep belongings secure if transiting through Pisco.

Where to Eat

Paracas is one of the best places in Peru to eat fresh ceviche — fish brought in daily by local boats. The restaurants along the malecón in El Chaco are consistently good. El Chorito is a local favourite for honest portions at honest prices. Avoid restaurants that wave menus at you from the street — walk further for better quality. Pair your ceviche with a cold Cusqueña beer or a glass of local Ica wine.

Where to Stay

Stay in Paracas (El Chaco) — not Pisco. Options range from budget hostels to boutique resorts with Pacific views. The Hotel Paracas and Libertador Paracas are the top-end options with ocean-facing pools. For mid-range comfort, the Doubletree by Hilton Paracas is reliable. Book well ahead for weekends, as Lima residents fill the town on holiday breaks. Use Travelpayouts or Booking.com for current rates and availability.

Local Tips

Morning boat tours (8–9 AM) have calmer seas and better wildlife activity. Bring binoculars for Ballestas — you'll see far more. The best Candelabra geoglyph photos need a zoom lens. Combine Paracas with Huacachina (dunes and oasis) and Nazca for an efficient south Peru circuit — all tours in the sidebar include these combinations. If you're travelling independently, shared shuttles run between Paracas, Ica, and Nazca daily.
