Getting There
The Royal Tombs of Sipán are located near the town of Huaca Rajada, about 35 km southeast of Chiclayo in the Lambayeque region of northern Peru. Chiclayo is 770 km north of Lima — accessible by overnight bus (Cruz del Sur, Oltursa) or a short domestic flight (approx. 1.5 hours). From Chiclayo, hire a taxi or take a local bus (combi) to Sipán — the drive takes about 45 minutes. The Royal Tombs Museum in Lambayeque city (20 minutes from Chiclayo) houses the best-preserved artefacts and is an essential companion visit.
What to See
Discovered in 1987 by archaeologist Walter Alva, the Royal Tombs of Sipán are the most significant archaeological find in the Americas since Machu Picchu. The burial chambers of the Lord of Sipán — a Moche ruler from around 300 AD — were found intact, filled with extraordinary gold and silver jewellery, ceremonial regalia, and sacrificed attendants. The on-site museum at Huaca Rajada presents the context and scale of the find remarkably well. Allow at least 2–3 hours for the site and museum combined. The Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán in Lambayeque houses the actual artefacts in a spectacular purpose-built pyramid museum — this is the highlight of the northern circuit.
Where to Stay
Stay in Chiclayo — the largest city in the region, with the widest range of hotels and restaurants. The Costa del Sol Wyndham Chiclayo and Gran Hotel Chiclayo are reliable mid-to-upper range options. Chiclayo also gives access to other nearby Moche and Chimú sites including Túcume, Batán Grande, and the ruins at Puruchuco. Use Travelpayouts or Booking.com to compare current rates.
Practical Tips
Visit the Sipán site first thing in the morning, then the Lambayeque museum in the afternoon — the museum's air-conditioned interior is a welcome break from the midday heat. Hire a local guide at the site entrance for a much richer experience — English-speaking guides are available. The northern desert region is hot and dry year-round; carry water and sun protection. Combine with the Chan Chan ruins near Trujillo (4 hours south) for a comprehensive northern Peru archaeology circuit.
